So many aspects affect how deeply a detector can sense metal that it’s impossible to give a straight answer. Low-frequency machines at 2-4 kHz are best for deep-seeking everything, mid frequency 5-12 kHz for relics, jewelry and coins, and higher frequencies for gold. High-frequency kHz has shorter wavelengths and finds smaller targets with less conductivity, such as nuggets and flakes of gold.
Once a target is roughly located, use a pinpointer to find out exactly where it is. Carrying a detector for hours can tire you out before you’re ready to head home. Once you have a detector there’s not much else required, but some extra bits and pieces can make you comfortable and help with the tricky aspects. Salt from the ocean water and surf spray can also cause problems with components. However, venturing onto the wet sand or into salt water is another kettle of fish.
They are not detecting the gold, but rather the magnetite that settles out in the same places on the stream bed. Metal detectors have been used to look for placer gold deposits in streams that are known to have gold. And a gold bar from a bank will react differently than a natrually formed gold nugget in the ground, because of the difference in conductivity – the natural gold sample will have pits (voids) that will inhibit flow of current, while a gold bar in Fort Knox has no such issues. I tried to find discussion in the NET about using detectors for mineral hunting, but there seems to be very little data to be found, apart from gold/copper prospecting.
Army used in the Blackhawk War of 1832, said long-time member Gene Scullion. Some specialize in prospecting for gold (yes, there is gold in Wisconsin.) Others work closely with archaeologists as they scour historic sites for relics that might reveal something of the past.
High-frequency metals such as gold register a high reading whereas low frequency like iron will fall lower on the scale. All metal will obviously detect everything, full discrimination will ignore low-value targets like iron, and tone discrimination will emit a different tone for each find.

However, for this to be achieved, the best metal detector brand has to be used. Apart from being a hobby and a sport, metal detecting can pay for itself from the sale of the found treasures. Metal detecting is a good outdoor activity as an individual and also for friends and family.
Taking a long slow sweep of your yard with a metal detector is a great place to begin. the A kilohertz or a kHz is the number of waves a metal detector can send into the soil.
